Designing a new way to watch eSports

A fresh, new visual language

I joined team BLAST on a contract basis to strengthen and develop the creative digital product capacity within the business. I helped to launch an exciting new platform designed specifically for streaming eSports. Having immersed myself in the electric experience of watching live GS:GO matches, I wanted to ensure our digital platform was imbued with the same fresh, energetic feel that reflected the passion and energy that lies at the heart of eSports culture.

To do that we established a whole new design system and visual language that sat comfortably alongside the BLAST parent brand, and worked with internal teams to help articulate where this innovative product sat within the brand hierarchy.

 

Streaming for eSports - done right

Like any sports tournament BLAST Premier generates a huge amount of content. We listened carefully to CS:GO fans to ensure our interface allowed users to find stand out moments, relive all of the best bits and seamlessly jump to the live action.

 

Distinctive custom assets

Working with an imaginative and talented internal team we created a set of distinctive custom assets. The BLAST Bots serve as a friendly guide to the new platform, and are able to be adopted by fans to serve as a PFP in the chat feature. The beautifully crafted 3D render sits well with the refreshed design language, and allowed the Bots to have a life in the arena as well as online.

 
 

Be a part of the action, wherever you are…

As well as streaming matches we designed and developed features that gave fans the chance to directly input into the event. The platform allows fans to vote on polls or ask questions directly to the presenters and athletes.

 
 
 
 
 

A place for true fans

Where platforms like Twitch and YouTube may pull in a more generalist audience, the creation of a custom eSport platform like BLAST TV created a space for truly like minded fans to call home. Whoever your favourite team might be, custom features and a dedicated space for CS:GO encouraged higher quality fan discussion and connection. BLAST’s authenticity and love of the sport shines through in the end user experience.
